How a Florida paycheck works
Florida is one of the states that does not tax wages. There is no state income tax and no state disability insurance deduction taken from paychecks. That means the main withholdings from a Florida paycheck are federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare (together called FICA), plus anything you choose, such as health insurance or a 401(k) contribution.
Local taxes are also not common for wages in Florida, so this calculator only needs the federal side.
2026 federal figures used
This calculator uses the 2026 tax year numbers published by the IRS in Revenue Procedure 2025-32 and the Social Security Administration:
| Filing status | Standard deduction | 10% up to | 12% up to | 22% up to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single | $16,100 | $12,400 | $50,400 | $105,700 |
| Married filing jointly | $32,200 | $24,800 | $100,800 | $211,400 |
| Head of household | $24,150 | $17,700 | $67,450 | $105,700 |
Higher bands are 24%, 32%, 35% and 37%. The Social Security wage base is $184,500 for 2026. Medicare is 1.45% on all wages, plus 0.9% on wages above $200,000 for withholding.
How take-home pay is calculated
- Start with gross pay for the period.
- Subtract pre-tax deductions. 401(k) reduces income tax only. Health insurance through a cafeteria plan reduces income tax, Social Security and Medicare.
- Annualize the result by multiplying by the number of pay periods.
- Subtract the standard deduction to get taxable income, then apply the tax brackets.
- Divide the annual tax by the pay periods and add any extra withholding.
- Calculate Social Security (6.2%) and Medicare (1.45%).
Why your actual paycheck may differ
- Your W-4: dependents, other income, deductions and extra withholding change federal tax.
- Payroll methods: employers may use IRS percentage tables or wage-bracket tables, which can differ by a few dollars from this estimate.
- Bonuses and overtime: supplemental pay can be withheld at a flat rate.
- Other deductions: union dues, garnishments, HSA and post-tax benefits are not included.
- Tax credits: credits such as the child tax credit are claimed on your return or through your W-4.
Pay frequency and paycheck size
Your annual pay is the same no matter how often you are paid, but the number of paychecks changes. A biweekly schedule has 26 paychecks, so two months each year can include three paychecks. Semi-monthly has 24 equal paychecks and monthly has 12. Weekly has 52. This calculator divides annual amounts by the number you pick.
Florida paycheck tips
- Increase 401(k) contributions to lower federal income tax now.
- If you owe tax every spring, add extra withholding per paycheck.
- If you receive a large refund, consider adjusting your W-4 so you receive more in each paycheck.
- Hourly workers with variable hours can enter average weekly hours to estimate typical pay.
Florida and other taxes
While wages are not taxed by the state, Florida residents still pay sales tax and property tax, and some people owe tax on investment income to the federal government. If you work in another state but live in Florida, that state's income tax may apply to your wages, so this calculator may not match your situation.
