What is a weighted grade?
In a weighted grading system, not every piece of work counts the same. A final exam may be worth 30% of your grade while homework is worth 10%. A weighted grade multiplies each score by how much it counts, adds those up, and gives one overall percentage.
That is why a simple average of your scores can be wrong. If you got 100% on homework and 70% on a heavy exam, the exam pulls your grade down more than a plain average would suggest.
How to calculate a weighted grade step by step
- Write down each category's grade as a percent.
- Write down each category's weight.
- Multiply each grade by its weight.
- Add the results.
- Divide by the total weight (100 if the weights add to 100).
Using the calculator
- Each row is one category or one big assignment. Add rows for as many as you need.
- Leave a row empty if you have not been graded on it yet. It is skipped.
- If you enter several grades inside one category, average them first, or enter each one with its share of that category's weight.
- The goal planner uses whatever weight is left after your rows. If your weights total 80%, the remaining 20% is used.
When weights do not add up to 100
Weights that do not total 100% usually mean one of two things. Either part of the course has not been graded yet, or a weight was typed wrong. The calculator still computes the answer from the weights you entered and shows the total, so you can see which case you are in.
If the total is below 100%, the result is your average so far. If it is above 100%, check the syllabus. Some courses use extra credit categories that push the total over 100 on purpose.
What average do I need on the rest?
Set the target grade, then work out how many points you still need after what you have already earned:
Needed average = (target ร 100 โ points earned) รท remaining weight
If the answer is over 100%, the target is out of reach. If it is zero or less, you are already safe.
Common letter grade cutoffs
| Percent | Letter |
|---|---|
| 93-100 | A |
| 90-92 | A- |
| 87-89 | B+ |
| 83-86 | B |
| 80-82 | B- |
| 77-79 | C+ |
| 73-76 | C |
| 70-72 | C- |
| 60-69 | D range |
| Below 60 | F |
Your school may use a different scale, so treat the letter as a guide.
Mistakes to avoid
- Typing weights as decimals (0.25) in one row and percents (25) in another.
- Counting a category twice.
- Forgetting that dropped lowest scores change a category's average.
- Mixing up a points-based course with a weighted one. In a points-based course you add all points and divide by total points instead.
