CK3 console commands let you add gold, piety and prestige, give or remove traits, hand out titles and switch characters. Unlike some Paradox games, the console is hidden until you turn on debug mode.
The steps and syntax here come from the Paradox wiki, cross-checked with a second guide. If you play the A Game of Thrones (AGOT) mod, see the AGOT section: no AGOT-specific command list could be verified.
How to open the console in Crusader Kings III
- Steam: right-click the game, open Properties, General, and put -debug_mode in Launch Options. Then start the game.
- Paradox Launcher: open Game Settings, find the debug mode section and click Launch.
- Without Steam: add -debug_mode to the end of the Target field of a ck3.exe shortcut. GOG: add debug_mode as a command line argument.
- Load a game that is not Ironman.
- Press ` on QWERTY keyboards. German layouts use §, French use ², and Shift+Alt+C is a fallback.
- Type a command and press Enter. Press Tab after typing a command to see valid options.
This is the PC version. The wiki also mentions the mods Free Console Access and Debug Toggle, which can switch debug mode on in game. No source covers commands on Xbox or PlayStation.
How Crusader Kings III commands work
- Square brackets mark arguments. Do not type them.
- Trait IDs are usually the trait name in lowercase with underscores, but some differ. Use Tab to list valid IDs.
- Turn on debug mode and hover over a character to see their ID, or use charinfo. Title IDs show when hovering a title's coat of arms.

CK3 console commands for traits
Use add_trait <trait id> to give your ruler a trait and remove_trait <trait id> to take it away. Add a character ID at the end to target someone else. Trait IDs normally match the lowercase trait name with underscores, for example brave or wise, but some traits use other IDs. Press Tab after typing the command to list valid options.
CK3 AGOT console commands
The same CK3 console and debug mode apply to games with the A Game of Thrones mod. Ironman games still block the console.
No CK3 AGOT command list was found. The only AGOT command reference located was for the older Crusader Kings II mod, so its IDs may not carry over. AGOT adds its own traits and titles, so use Tab and hover tooltips with debug mode to find the right IDs. Mod users report mixed results with the Debug Toggle mod, so launching with -debug_mode is the safer route.
How to find character and title IDs
- Enable debug mode.
- Hover over a character to see their ID, or type charinfo.
- Hover over a title's coat of arms to see the title ID.
- Use the ID at the end of the command.
Why Crusader Kings III console commands are not working
- Console does not open: confirm -debug_mode is set, the game is not Ironman, and try Shift+Alt+C.
- Unknown trait: press Tab after the command to list valid IDs.
- Message that console is unavailable in Ironman: start a normal save.
- Achievements missing: remove -debug_mode and avoid commands on saves you want achievements on.
