HOI4 console commands let you change political power, equipment, research, world tension and the country you control. The console is part of the game on PC, but it does not work in Ironman games.
This page lists commands that were checked against the Paradox wiki and other guides. Syntax is copied as written. Equipment names and IDs depend on your game version, so use help in the console if a name is rejected.
How to open the console in Hearts of Iron IV
- Start or load a game that is not in Ironman mode.
- Press the console key. On a US or UK keyboard this is ~ (tilde). German layouts use §, French layouts use ².
- If nothing opens, try the other keys the wiki lists: Shift+2, \, `, ", º, ^ or Shift+3, depending on your layout.
- Type a command and press Enter. Use the up and down arrows to repeat earlier commands.
- Type help to list commands, or help <command> to describe one.
Console commands are a PC feature. Ironman games block commands, and multiplayer is reported to have no console. No console on Xbox or PlayStation was found in the sources, so it is not confirmed there.
How Hearts of Iron IV commands work
- Square brackets in guides mark arguments. Do not type the brackets.
- Country tags are three letters, for example GER, SOV, USA.
- Equipment names are case sensitive and use internal IDs such as infantry_equipment_1.
- Many commands have short aliases, for example ae for add_equipment and roic for research_on_icon_click.

add_equipment only works for equipment you have already researched.

HOI4 console commands for equipment
Use add_equipment <amount> <equipment name>. For example, add_equipment 1000 infantry_equipment_1 adds 1000 infantry equipment. You need to have researched that equipment first, and names are case sensitive.
Ships are not supported by this command, but convoys are: ae 1000 convoy_1.
HOI4 console commands for world tension
The wiki lists threat <amount>. It adds or subtracts world tension generated by the tag you are playing, and threat alone shows the current level. Some guides name other tension commands, but they could not be confirmed, so they are left out here.
HOI4 research on click command
Type research_on_icon_click (or roic). After that, clicking a technology icon researches it immediately. The wiki says it ignores prerequisites and mutually exclusive choices. It is reported not to cover intelligence agency upgrades.
Hoi 4 console commands in Ironman and multiplayer
Hoi 4 console commands are not meant to run in Ironman games. Multiplayer is also reported to have no console. Start a normal single player game if the console does not respond.
Why Hearts of Iron IV console commands are not working
- Console does not open: try the key for your keyboard layout (~, §, ², \, `) and confirm the game is not Ironman.
- Equipment command does nothing: research the equipment first and check the exact, case-sensitive ID.
- Command not recognised: type help to check it exists in your game version.
- Achievements stopped: commands are reported to disable them for that save.
