People search for Terraria console commands expecting a Minecraft-style cheat box. Vanilla Terraria does not have one. What exists is three separate things: chat commands, a server console and the TShock server mod.
Knowing which of the three you mean answers most questions, including whether you can spawn items in single player or use commands on PS4.
How to use commands in Terraria
- Chat commands: press Enter on PC, type a slash command such as /help, and press Enter again to send.
- Server console: type commands with no slash into the dedicated server window or your host's Console tab.
- TShock commands: install TShock on a dedicated server, then type slash commands in chat as an account with the right permission.
- Debug commands exist, but the official wiki says they need a modification of the game program to enable.
The official wiki says chat opens on Xbox with Left Shoulder plus D-pad Down, on PlayStation with R1 plus the trackpad, and on Switch with R plus Share. It lists no platform limits on the basic chat commands. No source found confirms spawn or cheat commands on consoles.
How Terraria commands work
- Chat commands begin with /. Server console commands are typed without a slash.
- Chat commands may have localised names on some servers, but the English ones always work, according to the wiki.

TShock (server mod) item commands
TShock is not part of the base game. Syntax from guides is shown, and permission names vary.
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
/item <item name> [quantity] |
Spawns an item for yourself. Alias /i. Needs the spawn permission. |
/give <item> <player> [quantity] |
Gives an item to another player. Alias /g. Needs the give permission. |
Does Terraria have console commands?
Not in the cheat sense. The base game has a small set of chat commands and a dedicated server console for server management. Cheat commands such as spawning items belong to TShock or to client mods.
The official wiki lists debug commands, but they are PC-only, disabled by default, and require changing the game program to turn on.
Terraria console commands to spawn items
There is no vanilla command to spawn items. On a server with TShock you can use /item. For single player, tModLoader mods such as Cheat Sheet add an in-game menu instead of typed commands, but sources disagree on its hotkey, so check the mod page.
- Install TShock on the dedicated server and set yourself up as an admin account.
- Join the server and open chat with Enter.
- Type /item followed by the item name and a quantity, then send it.
Terraria console commands in single player
In single player you only get the chat commands that work for everyone, such as /help and /death. There is no built-in way to spawn items or change time from chat.
Terraria console commands on PS4
On PlayStation the wiki says you open chat with R1 plus the trackpad, and no restriction is listed for the basic chat commands. No source found shows spawn or cheat commands on PS4, so assume none.
Why Terraria console commands are not working
- Slash command does nothing in the server console: type it without the slash.
- Cannot use /item: TShock is not installed, or your account lacks permission.
- Cannot unban: vanilla has no unban command. Stop the server, edit banlist.txt and restart.
- Password or motd reset: console changes last only until the next restart.
