Fallout 3 has a built-in developer console on PC. It runs on the same Gamebryo engine family as New Vegas, so many commands are shared, but only commands seen in Fallout 3 sources are listed here.
The console is for the PC version. Below you will find the access steps, the verified commands and notes on caps, skills, items and weapons.
How to open the console in Fallout 3 (PC)
- Load a save in the game world.
- Press the tilde (~) key, found under Esc on a US keyboard. On a UK keyboard one source says to use the grave key (`).
- The game pauses and a prompt appears. Type a command and press Enter.
- Press the key again to close the console.
This is a PC feature. No source read describes a console for Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, so none is claimed.
How Fallout 3 commands work
- player.modav adds to a value. player.setav sets it to an exact number.
- Item commands take a base ID in hexadecimal and an amount: player.additem <base id> <amount>.
- Replace values in angle brackets with your own.

Fallout 3 console commands for caps, items, weapons and ammo
Caps are the item 0000000F, so player.additem 0000000f <amount> adds them. Every other item works the same way with its own base ID.
No fetched source gave a reliable ID table for Fallout 3 weapons or ammo, so none is printed here. Take a base ID from a Fallout 3 item ID list on the Fallout wiki and use player.additem with it.
Fallout 3 console commands for skills, level and XP
Use player.setav <skill> <number> to set a skill, or player.modav <skill> <number> to add to it. player.advlevel gives one level and player.rewardxp <number> grants XP.
Carry weight is covered by tgm, which removes weight limits while god mode is on. One source also lists a modav command for maximum carry weight, but it was written inconsistently, so it is not listed.
Fallout 3 PC console commands and shared commands
Fallout 3, Oblivion and New Vegas share the same command style. If a New Vegas command is not in the table above, test it in a separate save rather than assuming it works.
Why Fallout 3 console commands are not working
- The console does not open: use the key under Esc, or the grave key on a UK keyboard, while in the game world.
- Item not added: check the base ID is correct and complete.
- A command is not recognised: check spelling and that you did not type extra spaces.
