Fallout 4 has a built-in developer console on PC. You open it with one key and type commands to add items, change your level, skip quests or walk through walls. You do not need a mod for it.
Consoles are different. Xbox and PlayStation versions do not have this console, so most searches for Fallout 4 console commands on Xbox or PS4 end with the same answer. This page covers the verified PC commands first, then the console-platform facts.
How to use console commands in Fallout 4 (PC)
- Start the game and load a save so you are in the world, not in a menu.
- Press the tilde key (~), the key left of 1 on most keyboards. On a UK layout, one source says to use the @ key instead.
- Type the command exactly as shown and press Enter.
- Press the same key again to close the console.
The console works on PC only. Bethesda stated it would not add console commands to the Xbox One or PS4 versions, and guides confirm Xbox and PlayStation have no developer console.
How Fallout 4 commands work
- The sources write both Player.additem and player.additem, so capitalisation does not appear to matter.
- Item commands use a hexadecimal item ID, not the item name. For example caps are 0000000F.
- Values in angle brackets are placeholders you replace, for example player.additem <item id> <amount>.
- Commands that act on an NPC (kill, resurrect) take that NPC's ID. Look the ID up on a Fallout wiki list.

Fallout 4 console commands: level up, SPECIAL and perk points
player.setlevel followed by a number changes your level. One guide describes it as setting the level and another as changing it, so check your level after running it.
To change a SPECIAL stat, a guide gives player.modav with the stat name and a number, for example player.modav Strength 2. No consulted source gave a verified command that adds perk points directly, so none is listed. You can add a specific perk with player.addperk and the perk ID.
Fallout 4 console commands for items, caps, ammo and weapons
The pattern is player.additem <item id> <amount>. Caps use ID 0000000F. The IDs in the tables above are the ones found in sources. For armor, crafting materials (aluminum, adhesive) and legendary gear, look the ID up on a Fallout 4 item ID list, then use the same command.
Legendary weapons and armor have no single verified command in the sources read, so none is given here.
Fallout 4 console commands on Xbox One and PS4
There is no console to open on Xbox or PlayStation, and Bethesda said it would not add one. Several guides state the same.
Console players can use mods from the in-game mod menu instead. Guides note that mods disable achievements and trophies. Console commands themselves cannot be typed in on those platforms.
Companion affinity and quest commands
Use getav CA_affinity to read affinity and setav CA_affinity <number> to set it, with the companion selected. For a stuck quest, completequest <quest id> or resetquest <quest id> are the commands sources list. Quest IDs are on the Fallout wiki.
Why Fallout 4 console commands are not working
- The console does not open: make sure you are in gameplay, then try the @ key on a UK layout.
- Item not added: check the ID has all 8 characters.
- Command does nothing: some commands need a target, so open the console and click the NPC first.
- Save is acting strangely after commands: Bethesda says commands can corrupt saves, so load an earlier save.
