Fallout: New Vegas (FNV) has a developer console on PC. It needs no mod. You use it to add caps, ammo and items, change your level, skills and SPECIAL, and get unstuck.
The console is a PC feature. This page lists commands found in current guides, including the item commands people search for (caps, stimpaks, ammo), carry weight, level up and god mode.
How to use console commands in Fallout: New Vegas
- Load a save so you are in the game world.
- Press the tilde key (~), which sits left of the 1 key and above Tab.
- Type the command and press Enter.
- Press the same key again to close the console.
The console is for the PC version. No source read describes a console on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, so none is claimed.
How Fallout: New Vegas commands work
- Item commands use a form ID and an amount: player.additem <id> <amount>.
- Skills and SPECIAL are actor values. The sources write them as names such as guns, strength or carryweight.
- modav adds to (or subtracts from) a value. setav sets it to the number you type.
- Replace values in angle brackets with your own numbers.

Fallout New Vegas console commands for caps and carry weight
For caps, use player.additem 0000000f followed by the amount. Caps are an item with the ID 0000000F, so the same command pattern works for any item.
For carry weight, player.modav carryweight <number> is the version repeated across sources. It adds the number to your current maximum. One guide describes player.setav for carry weight, but modav is the safer choice.
Level up, XP, skills and SPECIAL
advlevel raises your level by one, and player.setlevel <number> sets it directly. A guide notes that setlevel changes only the level, not your skill points.
For skills, player.setav <skill> <number> sets a skill from 1 to 100 and player.modav <skill> <number> adds to it. A direct XP command was not consistent enough across sources to list, so use advlevel or setlevel instead.
Fallout New Vegas item codes: weapons, armor and ammo
Every item uses player.additem <id> <amount>. The tables above give verified IDs for caps, stimpaks and standard ammo. For specific weapons and armor, take the form ID from a New Vegas item list on the Fallout wiki and use the same command.
If an ID adds nothing, check it has all 8 characters, with leading zeros.
Why Fallout: New Vegas console commands are not working
- The console does not open: make sure you are in the game world and press the key above Tab, left of 1.
- Command is ignored: check spelling and that you included the amount.
- Achievements stopped: sources say spawning items or NPCs through the console can disable them.
- Stuck in the map: use tcl to walk out, then type it again to turn it off.
