Morrowind has a built-in console on PC, with no mod needed. Its commands use a different style from the later Fallout and Skyrim consoles: you target an actor with an arrow, for example player->AddItem.
The Steam and GOG release is the PC game, so the console is a PC feature. This page lists the commands that appear in the UESP wiki and a cheat guide, with the syntax rules that trip people up.
How to open the console in Morrowind
- Load a game so you are in the world.
- Press the key left of 1: the tilde (~) key on a US keyboard, the backtick (`) key on a British keyboard.
- Type a command and press Enter.
- Press the same key again to close the console.
The console belongs to the PC game. The original Xbox version has no console in any source read, so none is claimed.
How The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind commands work
- No spaces around the arrow: player->AddItem "Gold_001" 12345.
- Separate commands and values with a space, a comma, or both.
- Put quotes around any ID or name that contains a space, such as "Vedam Dren".
- Type integers without commas or spaces: 12345.
- Commands are case insensitive.
- Some commands act on a target. Click the NPC or object in the open console first.

How to add gold and items with Morrowind console commands
The UESP form for gold is player->AddItem "Gold_001" followed by an amount. Use the same pattern for any item, replacing Gold_001 with the item ID in quotes. One cheat guide writes the gold ID differently (gold_100), so use the UESP form Gold_001.
Item IDs are listed on item pages of the UESP wiki and in the Construction Set.
Set your level, skills and attributes
SetLevel takes an integer. For attributes and skills, UESP gives the pattern Set<Name> <value>, with SetSpeed 300 as an example. A cheat guide shows the same pattern with player->SetStrength 1000.
Skill and attribute names must match the game's internal names, so test a command and check your character sheet.
Teleport anywhere with COC
COC (CenterOnCell) places you at ground level in the named cell. Quote the name if it has spaces, for example a city or interior cell. Use it when you are stuck, or to skip travel.
Why The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind console commands are not working
- The console does not open: press the key left of 1, which is the backtick on UK keyboards.
- Command rejected: remove spaces around ->, and quote IDs with spaces.
- Nothing changes: some commands need the target clicked in the console first.
- Stuck in the world: use TCL to pass through, or COC to a nearby cell.
